Scams & Crime Prevention Advice |
Hi all,
The Wednesfield and Heath Town policing teams are issuing a seasonal warning regarding Romance Fraud and Shopping Safety. 1. Romance Fraud: "The Heartbreak Scam" With Valentine's Day approaching, scammers are increasingly active on dating sites and social media. They build emotional bonds with victims before asking for money. The Red Flags: They move the conversation off the dating app quickly, claim to be working abroad, and eventually request money for an "emergency" or travel. The Advice: Never send money or share bank details with someone you haven't met in person. If you think you've been targeted, report it to Action Fraud. 2. Retail Safety at Bentley Bridge & The Crossways The shopping hubs in Wednesfield and Heath Town will be busy next month with people buying gifts. This attracts pickpockets and purse dippers. Secure Your Bags: In crowded gift shops or florists, ensure your handbag is zipped and worn across your chest. Don't Be Distracted: Thieves often work in pairs to distract you while you’re looking at cards or displays. Vehicle Security: If you're leaving gifts in your car at Bentley Bridge, keep them out of sight in the boot. "All items gone, car locked" is the best policy. 3. Safe "Date Night" Planning If you are heading out for a meal in Wednesfield or Wolverhampton city centre: Home Security: Use a light timer so your house doesn't look empty while you're out. Social Media: Wait until you get home to post your Valentine's photos. Real-time "check-ins" tell burglars exactly when your house is vacant. Stay Alert For real-time local updates and "Meet the Team" events in February, make sure you are registered with WMnow community alerts. To report suspicious activity: Live Chat: West Midlands Police Contact Centre Phone: 101 (Non-emergency) or 999 (Emergency) Anonymous: Crimestoppers (0800 555 111)
